The Variegated Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum ‘Marble Queen’ or ‘N’Joy’) is a stunning variation of the classic Money Plant, distinguished by its heart-shaped leaves marbled in shades of creamy white, pale yellow, and green. Unlike the standard Golden Money Plant which has predominantly green leaves with yellow streaks, the Variegated Money Plant has a much higher proportion of white and cream colouring giving it a more decorative, premium appearance while retaining the same legendary easy-care nature that has made Money Plants a fixture in Indian homes for generations.
The core plant is the same both are varieties of Epipremnum aureum but the variegated version has significantly more white and cream colouring in its leaves due to reduced chlorophyll in those areas. This gives it a more visually striking, decorative look compared to the standard green-and-yellow Golden Money Plant. The trade-off is that the Variegated Money Plant grows slightly slower (less chlorophyll means slightly less energy from photosynthesis) and needs a little more light to maintain its vivid white colouring. In every other way care, adaptability, resilience they are virtually identical.
It’s one of the best. The Variegated Money Plant is adapted to warm, humid tropical conditions which closely describes the Indian climate for much of the year. It handles the warmth of Indian summers, the humidity of monsoon, and the indirect light of Indian apartments with equal ease. From Delhi living rooms to Chennai offices, Bangalore apartments to Mumbai balconies this plant adapts beautifully to the full range of Indian urban living conditions.
It needs bright to medium indirect light and slightly more than the standard Golden Money Plant due to its variegation. The white and cream portions of the leaf contain less chlorophyll, so the plant needs more overall light to produce the same amount of energy. In bright filtered light (near an east or north-facing window), the white colouring stays vivid and crisp. In lower light, the new leaves may emerge greener and less variegated as the plant compensates for reduced light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight which scorches the delicate white portions of the leaves.
Water once every 7–10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. In peak Indian summer, lean toward the shorter end perhaps every 6–7 days. During monsoon and winter, extend the interval to 10–14 days. The Variegated Money Plant is slightly more sensitive to overwatering than its all-green counterpart because its lower chlorophyll content means it processes water more slowly. When in doubt, wait an extra day or two before watering.
Yes the Money Plant in all its varieties is one of the most Vastu-recommended plants in Indian homes. It is traditionally placed in the south-east direction of the home, which is governed by Venus and associated with financial prosperity and positive energy. The Variegated variety, with its lighter, brighter foliage, is considered to bring additional brightness and positive vibration to the home environment. Avoid placing it in the north-east direction according to Vastu guidelines.
Yes and it looks spectacular doing it. Take a healthy stem cutting with 2–3 nodes, remove the lower leaves, and place it in a clean glass jar of water. Change the water every 5–7 days to prevent stagnation. The white and cream variegation against a clear glass jar is a genuinely beautiful tabletop display. It won’t grow as fast in water as in soil, but it will stay healthy and look stunning on a kitchen counter, study desk, or bathroom shelf indefinitely.
Yes. Like all Epipremnum aureum varieties, the Variegated Money Plant helps filter common indoor air pollutants including formaldehyde, benzene, and xylene. These toxins are present in most Indian urban homes from furniture, paints, cleaning products, and synthetic materials. For sealed apartments with limited ventilation increasingly common in Indian cities a few Money Plants distributed across rooms contributes meaningfully to better indoor air quality day after day.
The most common reason is insufficient light. The white variegation requires reasonable bright indirect light to be maintained without enough light, the plant produces new leaves with more chlorophyll (and therefore more green) as a survival mechanism. Move the plant to a brighter spot closer to an east or north-facing window and within a few weeks the new growth should return to a more vivid white-and-green pattern. A second possible cause is the plant being in very low humidity for extended periods.
Yes like all Epipremnum varieties, the Variegated Money Plant contains calcium oxalate crystals which are mildly toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested, causing mouth irritation and digestive discomfort. Keep it out of reach of pets trailing it from a high shelf, hanging basket, or wall hook works beautifully and keeps it safely elevated. It is non-toxic to humans but can cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals, so wash hands after extensive handling or pruning.
Regular pinching is the key. Snip the growing tips just above a leaf node every few weeks to encourage the stem to branch each pinched tip produces two new growth points, quickly making the plant look fuller and more lush. Ensure it receives adequate bright indirect light (the single biggest factor in healthy, compact growth) and feed it monthly during the growing season. A moss pole or trellis also encourages larger, more defined leaf development as the plant climbs.
A well-draining, airy potting mix works best a blend of 60% potting soil, 20% cocopeat, and 20% perlite or river sand ensures good drainage while retaining enough moisture for the roots. Avoid compacted or heavy garden soil. Good drainage is especially important during Indian monsoon when ambient humidity is high and the risk of overwatering and root rot increases significantly.
Slightly slower than the standard Golden Money Plant due to its lower chlorophyll content expect 10–20 cm of new vine growth per month in good conditions (bright indirect light, monthly feeding, consistent watering). With regular pinching, it becomes bushy faster than you’d expect. In lower light conditions, growth slows considerably. The variegated pattern on new leaves is most vivid when the plant is growing actively in good light.
Yes it’s a wonderful bedroom plant. Its trailing vines work beautifully on a high shelf or hanging planter where they can drape downward, creating a lush canopy effect that photographs beautifully and feels genuinely calming. It tolerates the lower light of most bedrooms, though placement near a window will keep the variegation more vivid. Like all Pothos varieties, it is safe to keep in bedrooms and continues its air-purifying work through the night.
It’s one of the most reliable and visually impressive plant gifts in the ₹299 price range. The variegated foliage looks far more premium than a standard Money Plant it photographs beautifully, suits any interior, and carries the same good-luck and Vastu symbolism that makes Money Plants culturally meaningful gifts in India. It’s a thoughtful choice for housewarmings, birthdays, Diwali, and any occasion where you want to give something living, lasting, and genuinely beautiful without a large budget.
